Week 1: clay phases, wedging & recycling

We start our first class together at the big communal table with a fresh cup of coffee or tea to catch up and get to know each other.

We’ll give you a quick intro into how clay works. Then, we roll up our sleeves and learn how to wedge and prepare your clay at the table so it's ready for the wheel.

Then we’ll jump on the wheel where you'll learn the correct posture and get a feel for centering the clay. We will throw our very first cylinders and cut them straight down the middle at the end of class. It’s a great way to see exactly what your wall thickness looks like & practice the mental side of pottery 😉: learning not to get attached! Things will break, wobble, and collapse, but it’s all part of the process.

The Goal: Today is pure practice and building muscle memory. No pressure as nobody keeps anything from this first session, and all clay goes straight into our recycle bin.

Week 2: centering, thickness & your first treasures

Now that you know how the wheel moves, it’s time to get a bit more control. We reactivate your muscle memory. Today's focus is on centering more efficiently, pulling up the walls evenly, and making sure your base isn't too thick or thin.

The goal: today we start to throw with a purpose. At the end of class, you will choose your 2 absolute favorite pieces to keep. These will go onto the shelves to dry until they are leather-hard.

Week 3: trimming & creative freedom

Your pieces from last week have dried to the perfect leather-hard stage and are ready to be finished. You’ll learn how to trim your pieces on the wheel to refine their shapes. We'll show you how to carve clean foot rings and give your pots a balanced, professional bottom.

Creative freedom: once your two pieces are trimmed, the rest of the class is yours to freely throw, experiment, and get more comfortable on the wheel.

Week 4: final touch & ready for the kiln

Today is all about perfecting your shapes and preparing them for the kiln. We focus entirely on the finishing touches. New thrown pots will get a “wet-trim”, cups can get handles and if you want to decorate your pieces by carving you can.

The goal: you will select up to 5 of your favourite items from the course that you want to fire. These will be set aside for the bisque fire (the first round in the kiln).

Week 5: the glaze party

Your pots have survived their first firing and are now hardened 'bisque' ware. Time to bring them to life with colour!

Over tea and cookies, we’ll explain the basics of glazing. You’ll learn how our studio glazes work and how to apply them. Then, you'll dip, pour, or brush your handmade pottery.

The goal: By the end of class, your pieces will go into the kiln for the final glaze fire. Within a few weeks, your unique, food-safe ceramic set will be ready to pick up and use at home!
