Not just a studio, a creative home

Our story

Wheelhouse was founded by Emilie and Marie, two Amsterdam-based ceramicists who were ready for something more than a borrowed wheel.

After years spent working in other studios, each of us felt it time to build a studio of our own.  We wanted a place to call our creative home, with room to experiment and play, all while being surrounded by people who care about the craft as much as we do. A studio that supports serious practice and welcomes people at the very beginning of their journey, in equal measure.

We set out to build the kind of place we had always wanted for ourselves.  A studio where others like us could make, learn and grow, both as a community and as individual artists. A space to work at your own pace, that supports serious practice and also welcomes people at the beginning of their learning.

We both know what a good studio community does for your work. So we chose to build one intentionally.

How it started

Designed to work differently

Many studios are built around classes. Wheelhouse is built around practice. Our focus is on creating a great place for you, and us, to create our best work.

We believe craft develops through exchange. So we want to create the conditions for people to learn from each other, not just from teachers.

We host skill-share sessions, conversation spaces, material swaps, and round tables where knowledge can move freely. Our workshops run from complete beginners to more technically advanced and specialist sessions, so that everyone can deepen their skills.

Wheelhouse is a non-profit association and a reinvestment-driven collective. That means surplus revenue flows back into the studio for better equipment, more programming, and wider access for the people in it.

As the studio grows, we want to extend that further, with subsidised access, mentorship, and support for makers who are building a longer-term practice.

Members have a real say in how that happens. We see ourselves as a launchpad, not just a workspace.
